How to Wear and Not Wear: Sequins

One of those trends that exploded during the holidays and still seems to be everywhere is all things sparkly... But sequins can be a difficult thing to pull off without looking like a disco ball. I can't tell you the number of times I've seen a girl rocking a sparkly dress and she looks more like an extra on star trek then a hot potato.

Rule # 1: Big sequins look cheap. If you don't want to look like your reliving Halloween, be careful on what type of sequins you are choosing...the best kind look like liquid when they move and don't scream dance recital for teenage girls.

Rule # 2: Please don't over do it. You don't need to accessorize up the wazoo, the sequins are enough. No, seriously, they are enough.

A few options for the wearing of sequins...

I think this is the easiest and most versatile way to wear some sparkle and still look chic. Throw it on with jeans for a more casual look or spice up a little black dress, either way you are good to go.

If you're feeling a little more adventurous, take a cue from Blake lively and add a zing of color for an eye catching ensemble.

Probably my favorite. Somehow with all that sparkle it still gives off a bohemian feel. Be sure to pair with a chunky sweater for a great juxtaposition of texture. LOVE.

Sequin Clutch:

If you're feeling a tad bit shy about the amount of dazzle going on then a small accent piece is a good way to go. After all, it's all about baby steps. I love a chic all black ensemble with a sequin clutch; it adds just the right amount of "umph" to a classic outfit.

Go crazy. Go for the full on sequin dress. Just make sure the cut isn't too slutty (sparkles and too much skin is not a good combo)...that's why I love this shift dress with sleeves. It shows just the right amount of leg without looking cheap and costumey.
